On meditation : Krishnan Kartha answers Baiju's question

Dear Sir,
1. During meditation, is it OK to keep the eyes open? Is it necessary to close the eyes? When I close the eyes, most frequently, I lose concentration and thoughts come in. But when I keep eyes open and look at something, thoughts don't disturb most frequently as before.
2. You said that Buddhist monk look at their stomach during meditation. I tried that, but the problem is I need to bend my back and neck and isn't it contrary to common belief that we need to keep the backbone straight during meditation? Instead of the stomach, is it OK to look at a spot on the wall and sit straight?

 Krishnan Kartha said: Dear Baiju,
Buddhists focus their attention on 'hara' . They dont look at their stomach as you tried. Just go through some pictures of buddha meditating. You will see that his eyes are partly open looking at the floor in front of them, They watch the swelling of belly during the respiration as a primer to conentrate.

Keeping eyes open. There is a primary practice called Trataka. Fixing the uninterrupted gaze on a point or any objective. This is just a process. A means. Not an end.
