SOMA in Vedic literature is misunderstood as an intoxicating elixir consumed by Deva s ( luminous bodies) prepared from Somalatha, a creeper. There exists Somalatha, and also the process of making soma in yajna as an event. But the inner meaning of it has to be understood. SOMA = Sa + Uma . Means "with Uma" . Uma may be easily misunderstood as the consort of Lord Shiva of Puranas. But the real meaning is the "Ananda" aspect of Sat Chit Ananda. This Ananda aspect is also called as "Sakthi" ( Chith being "Siva ) Yang by Taoism, 'Priyam" by Vedanthins . This is the experience of what is known. So Sa+ Uma means the Wisdom, the synthesis of Awareness and Experience. Thus SOMA is nectarine, One who has this wisdom is intoxicated, goes without saying..
Eva Shiva Infinita : a sublime information
Alby Xavier : So there was no drinking of SOMA?
Krishnan Kartha : Ofcourse, there was, Alby Xavier. The ritual side was always in polarity with philosophy. In Yajna, even the purchase of SOMALATHA is a ritual. There is an elevated position for the urn containing the Somarasa, the juice of Soma creeper. The Yajamana (the main sacrificer) will ceremonially drink the soma towards the end of the Yajna. But that is symbolic. The purpose of Yajna initially was cultivation of knowledge. But there were by products like good harvest good rain etc. Soon the consumerist in Man focussed on those hymns which brought such results. So Yajnas started to become result oriented. There it got seperated from Wisdom. Deities were started to be worshiped then...
