The most important quality a Vedanthin should possess is "TITIKSHA" . What is Thithiksha ? It is the tolerance of all miseries, without any grudge
without any thought, and without any lamentation .
Krishnan Kartha said; Sugatha, Man goes in search of Truth when he encounters miseries and he wants to get rid of them.. Even the Siddhaartha became Gautama Buddha in this manner as you know..
But you may look at the interesting process of evolution in this.
As you said one may end in tolerance as you quoted above.
But this happens in stages.
At first, one tries to escape from miseries. He avoids miseries. Evades miseries. Evades objects of experiences for fear of resultant miseries.
After some time as such, he understands that ineterest in pleasures are not ideal.
Now he searches no more pleasures. when encountered with pleasures, he will be reluctant to experience the pleasures.
He no more fears miseries. When misery comes he does not lament.
In the tertiary state, he does not fear miseries nor refuse them, he may even welcome pain...
When he encunters pain, he will fully go through it by suffering the pain, as a brave person.
He does not look into the causes of the pain nor, maintains no regrets or revenge...
Likewise, he does not refuse pleasures too....
He passes through enjoyment of pleasures in wholesome manner...
My Master says " Be in the water , but not the water in you! "
As Shankara puts in " Nandathi Nandathi Nandathyeva!
He is the great One. The Jeevanmuktha, the one he is free of the Life's tethers ...
Because he goes through everything but remains untainted...
This is the evolution... From Baddha (bound) to Buddha ( the Enlightened ) and from Buddha to Muktha (the liberated One)
